ANR-ChiBarAPS
The ChiBarAPS research project, “The End of a Life of Obesity? A Sociological Study of Biographical Uncertainties and Changes in Body Practices Following Bariatric Surgery, ” for which Santésih is the principal investigator, was selected in the 2023 General Call for Proposals (AAPG2023) issued by the National Research Agency (ANR). The project is co-led by Cresco at Toulouse Sabatier University, L-Vis at Lyon 1 University, the Max Weber Center at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Étienne, Tetras at the University of Lorraine, and Ideas at Aix-Marseille University. It also involves centers specializing in bariatric surgery at the University Hospitals (CHU) in Toulouse, Montpellier, and Lyon.
The research project examines the life experiences of individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery during the two years following the procedure, focusing on three dimensions. The first is the perception of bodily changes and one’s relationship with oneself after the surgery. The second is the experience of support systems, whether medical or non-medical, such as associations for people living with obesity, peer groups, cultural or sports organizations, etc. The third is social participation and changes in lifestyle habits, with a focus on professional and leisure activities, sexual and emotional life, and aesthetic and clothing practices.
These three dimensions will be examined from a longitudinal perspective over the two years following the surgery and across participants’ life courses to capture changes and continuities over time. The study consists of a qualitative component and a quantitative component. The qualitative component is structured around repeated interviews conducted 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery, with 30 participants recruited from the university hospitals in Toulouse, Montpellier, and Lyon. The quantitative component will be based on questionnaires designed based on the analysis of the interviews and completed by at least 200 participants, also at 6, 12, and 24 months after the surgery.
