ANR-ChiBarAPS

The ChiBarAPS research project, "The end of a career of obesity? Sociological study of biographical uncertainties and changes in physical practices after bariatric surgery," led by Santésih, was selected as a winner of the 2023 Generic Call for Projects (AAPG2023) by the French National Research Agency (ANR). The project is co-led by Cresco at Toulouse Sabatier University, L-Vis at Lyon 1 University, the Max Weber Center at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Etienne, Tetras at the University of Lorraine, and Ideas at Aix-Marseille University. It also involves centers specializing in bariatric surgery at the University Hospitals (CHU) of Toulouse, Montpellier, and Lyon.

The research project focuses on the life experiences of people who have undergone bariatric surgery in the two years following the operation, paying attention to three dimensions. The first is the perception of bodily transformations and the relationship to oneself after the operation. The second is the experience of support systems, whether medical or non-medical, such as associations for people with obesity, peer groups, cultural or sports associations, etc. The third is social participation and changes in lifestyle, focusing on professional and leisure activities, sexual and emotional life, and aesthetic and clothing practices.

These three dimensions will be addressed from a longitudinal perspective over the two years following the operation and across the life course in order to understand the changes and continuities over time. The survey consists of a qualitative component and a quantitative component. The qualitative component is organized around interviews conducted at 6, 12, and 24 months after the operation with 30 people recruited from the university hospitals of Toulouse, Montpellier, and Lyon. The quantitative component will be based on questionnaires designed on the basis of the analysis of the interviews and completed by at least 200 people, also 6, 12, and 24 months after the operation.
