ANR-ChiBarAPS

The ChiBarAPS research project, "The end of an obese career? Sociological study of biographical uncertainties and the evolution of post-bariatric surgery body practices", of which Santésih is the main leader, was the winner of the 2023 Generic Call for Projects (AAPG2023) of the French National Research Agency (ANR). The project is co-led by the Cresco of the University of Toulouse Sabatier, the L-Vis of the University of Lyon 1, the Max Weber Centre of the Jean Monnet University of Saint-Etienne, Tetras of the University of Lorraine and the Ideas of the University of Aix-Marseille. It also involves the centres specialising in bariatric surgery at the University Hospitals and University Hospitals (CHU) of Toulouse, Montpellier and Lyon.

The research project focuses on the life experiences of people who underwent bariatric surgery in the two years following surgery, paying attention to three dimensions. The first is the perception of bodily transformations and the relationship with oneself after the operation. The second is the experience of support systems, whether medical or non-medical such as associations of people with obesity, peer groups, cultural or sports associations, etc. The third is social participation and the transformation of lifestyle habits by paying attention to professional activities, leisure activities, sexual and emotional life, aesthetic or clothing practices.

These three dimensions will be addressed from a longitudinal perspective during the two years following the operation and at the level of life courses in order to grasp their transformations and continuities over time. The survey is composed of a qualitative and a quantitative component. The qualitative component is organized around repeated interviews at 6, 12 and 24 months after the operation, with 30 people recruited from the departments of the University Hospitals of Toulouse, Montpellier and Lyon. The quantitative component will be based on questionnaires, designed from the analysis of the interviews, and completed by at least 200 people, also at 6, 12 and 24 months after the operation.
