ANR-ChiBarAPS

The ChiBarAPS research project, "The end of an obese career? Étude sociologique des incertitudes biographiques et de l'évolution des pratiques corporelles post-chirurgie bariatrique", for which Santésih is lead sponsor, has been awarded a prize by the French National Research Agency (ANR)'s Appel à projet générique 2023 (AAPG2023). The project is co-sponsored by Cresco at Toulouse Sabatier University, L-Vis at Lyon 1 University, the Max Weber Center at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Etienne, Tetras at Lorraine University and Ideas at Aix-Marseille University. It also involves the specialized bariatric surgery centers of the University Hospitals (CHU) of Toulouse, Montpellier and Lyon.

The research project looks at the life experiences of people who have undergone bariatric surgery in the two years following the operation, focusing on three dimensions. The first is the perception of bodily transformations and the relationship with oneself after the operation. The second is experience of support services, whether medical or non-medical, such as obesity associations, peer groups, cultural or sports associations, etc. The third is social participation and self-esteem. The third is social participation and the transformation of lifestyle habits, with attention to professional and leisure activities, sexual and affective life, and aesthetic and clothing practices.

These three dimensions will be approached from a longitudinal perspective over the two years following the operation, and on a life-course scale to capture transformations and continuities over time. The survey consists of a qualitative and a quantitative component. The qualitative component will involve repeated interviews at 6, 12 and 24 months after the operation, with 30 people recruited from the Toulouse, Montpellier and Lyon university hospital departments. The quantitative component will be based on questionnaires, designed on the basis of interview analysis, and completed by at least 200 people, also at 6, 12 and 24 months after the operation.
