ANR-ChiBarAPS
The ChiBarAPS research project, “The End of a Life of Obesity? A Sociological Study of Biographical Uncertainties and Changes in Body Practices Following Bariatric Surgery, ” for which Santésih is the principal investigator, was selected in the 2023 General Call for Proposals (AAPG2023) issued by the National Research Agency (ANR). The project is co-led by Cresco at the University of Toulouse Sabatier, L-Vis at the University of Lyon 1, the Max Weber Center at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Étienne, Tetras at the University of Lorraine, and Ideas at Aix-Marseille University. It also involves specialized bariatric surgery centers at the University Hospitals (CHU) in Toulouse, Montpellier, and Lyon.
The research project examines the life experiences of individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery within two years of the operation, focusing on three dimensions. The first is the perception of bodily changes and one’s relationship with oneself after the operation. The second is the experience of support systems, whether medical or non-medical, such as associations for people with obesity, peer groups, cultural or sports organizations, etc. The third is social participation and changes in lifestyle habits, focusing on professional and leisure activities, sexual and emotional life, and aesthetic or clothing practices.
These three dimensions will be examined from a longitudinal perspective over the two years following the surgery and across the course of participants’ lives to capture changes and continuities over time. The study consists of a qualitative component and a quantitative component. The qualitative component is organized around repeated interviews at 6, 12, and 24 months post-surgery, with 30 participants recruited from the university hospitals in Toulouse, Montpellier, and Lyon. The quantitative component will be based on questionnaires, designed based on the analysis of the interviews, and completed by at least 200 people, also at 6, 12, and 24 months after the operation.
