FICTION and Social Sciences

International Conference – May 16 & 17, 2024 – MSH-SUD ( Espace Saint-Charles)

71 Rue du Professeur Henri Serre, 34090 Montpellier

Through this conference, we aim to create a space for discussion—a “community of language”—centered on fiction and its potential connections to anthropology, and more broadly to the social sciences. The theme is not new, as a conference was already held at Paris 1 University in 2014 titled “Fiction and the Social Sciences. Good and Bad Company.” That conference addressed the relationships of competition, collaboration, and complementarity between fiction and the social sciences. The conference we are organizing will be an opportunity, on the one hand, to build on these reflections begun in 2014 and, on the other hand, to go beyond them in order to consider certain more recent uses of fiction in the social sciences, particularly through the“fictional investigation.”
