FICTION and Social Sciences

International Conference – May 16 & 17, 2024 – MSH-SUD ( Saint-Charles space)

71 Professor Henri Serre Street, 34090 Montpellier

Through this symposium, we hope to create a space for discussion—a "community of language"—around fiction and its possible links with anthropology, and more generally with the social sciences. The theme is not new, since in 2014 a symposium was already held at Paris 1 University entitled "Fiction and the Social Sciences. Good and Bad Company." It addressed the relationships of competition, collaboration, and complementarity between fiction and the social sciences. The conference we are organizing will be an opportunity, on the one hand, to continue the discussions begun in 2014 and, on the other hand, to expand on them in order to consider some more recent uses of fiction in the social sciences, particularly through the use of "fictional inquiry."

The collective workLe sport, un objet social (Sport, a social object), whichhas just been published by Alliance Athéna, traces the national structuring effort that has been underway for several years under the impetus of learned societies in the social sciences and humanities of sport, of which the December 2022 congress was just one expression.
